The Cliff Island School

The Cliff Island school is a one-room schoolhouse for K-5 students. For the 2003-04 school year, the Cliff Island school has 7 students and one teacher, Mrs. MacVane. The school has a small library, with a librarian who comes over from Portland every month. There is also an art teacher who comes once a month from Portland to hold art classes where the kids make anything from birdhouses, to relief prints, to paintings of the island. Cliff Island students also have the opportunity to learn Spanish with another teacher once a week.

After 5th grade, Cliff Island students take the ferry over to middle school in Portland. The ferry leaves Cliff at 6:15 in the morning and usually returns around 4:00 in the afternoon. The older island kids will make this commute from 6th grade all the way through high school. The younger students also have many opportunities to make the shuttle into Portland, for such activities as visiting the Children's Museum and taking swimming lessons.
