The Scheu House/Kennedy House
The Scheu's house, which sits ajacent to Kennedy Beach
The Scheu house, neighbored by Paul Potter's house, and the shared fish house.
Oral history says that the Archer and Eunice (Pettengill) Kennedy house, now owned by Ed and Molly Scheu, was built by Moses Pettengill's son Alvery Pettengill. Eunice was the daugter of Charles Pettengill. The 1914 Richard's map of the island clearly shows the property but labels it as belonging to the estate of "Clara Pettengill", however, a search of David Coyle's Cliff Island genealogy finds no mention of any such person. The 1863 chart does show a cluster of small buildings on the site, possibly representing a residence of a Horr family member. It was recently pointed out by Ted Reiner, who has done work on this site, that the foundation of the Kennedy house appears to show two different construction techniques. Whether this indicates that the Kennedy house was built around an exisiting structure or whether the foundation of an earlier building was incorporatied into the construction of an entirely new house is unclear.
